Did you guys see the last scene?! OMFG! But before we jump ahead, let’s discuss the highlights. Spoilers ahead…
Let’s Recapitulate, Shall We?
Thank God the episode skipped the typical — although fantastic — crime scene. We jumped right in to the shooting of Nina Sharp and discovered that weird, time-jumping, melting guy a.k.a. David Jones was responsible for the crime. He was looking for an energy source that William Bell hid in Nina’s arm. They all come to realize that Jones is trying to jump to an alternate dimension to find Bell. Oh snap! And that Jones is looking for “soft spots” in the world to make the jump. It’s amazing that Olivia and company took to the idea so easily.
Walter is off with the Observer, who drops him off at his old beach house. His mission is to find a device that will plug up the window to this alternate dimension. Peter has a hunch about his whereabouts and together they find Walter’s gadget and head to Raiden Lake. Mortal Kombat fans much?
Amazingly (/sarcasm), Olivia heads to the same location, where Jones is already at work. The portal opens as Olivia’s team attempts to stop him. There is some gun fire, but ultimately it is Peter who closes the portal with Walter’s device. Jones falls to the ground and reveals that he has been cut in half. Awesome! But I won’t rule out the possibility of Jones returning in season two.
Now for the Jaw-dropping Moments
Throughout the show two things were hinted at: We would see William Bell and Walter has taken something very close to him from the other dimension. I will brag that I called the second one. It was so obvious when Walter was telling the story about Peter being sick as a young boy and then went on to ask Peter if he recognized the coin from his childhood. Right? Anyway, an emotional Walter goes to a graveyard and the camera pans down and shows Peter’s gravestone.
In the final scenes we see Olivia get stood up for lunch by Nina Sharp. She storms out of the restaurant and on her way down the elevator, the light flickers. We see people jump in and out of the picture and she arrives in a bizarre white hallway. She enters the office of William Bell and then she walks to the window when she realizes that she’s jumped dimensions. The camera pans out and…yes, she is in the still-standing World Trade Center.
So many questions for season two, right?! Is Olivia going to be stuck in the other dimension or is William Bell returning to our dimension? Will Peter find out about his past? And what about Leonard Nemoy? Didn’t you all love last’s week’s Star Trek reference? Great timing and cross promoting or what?
I am so glad that the writers did not disappoint. There have been moments in the past season that have been questionable and confusing — mostly because of the multiple breaks left fans forgetting about the overarching plot. I know, I know. J.J. Abrams wanted to create something different from Lost — a show that you could turn on at any time without having to know the backstory. But, the show persevered and was picked up for a second season. Yay!
